Cookies

A cookie is a small file a website asks your browser to keep, so it can recognise the same browser later. This page lists every cookie this site is responsible for, what each one is for, and how to refuse them.

Counting visits without cookies

Our own record of how the site is doing sets no cookie at all. When you open a page we note the page itself, the site you arrived from, and how wide your screen is, so we know whether to design for a phone or a desktop.

Your IP address and browser are turned into a one way code before anything is written down, using a key that is replaced every day. That lets us tell two people apart on a given day and nothing more. We cannot follow you from one day to the next, and we cannot work backwards from what we hold to who you are.

Vercel, who host the site, count visits the same way. They identify a browser by a hash of the request rather than a cookie, and throw it away after a day. They see the page, the site you came from, your country and region, and which browser and device you are on. None of it is tied to you, and none of it follows you anywhere else.

Cookies this site sets

We only set cookies if you agree on the banner, and you can change that answer above at any time. We use Microsoft Clarity to see how pages are actually used, through heat maps and recordings of on page activity such as clicks and scrolling. Clarity is a Microsoft product, and it sets the cookies below.

Microsoft keeps its own current list at Microsoft Learn, and explains what it does with the data in the Microsoft Privacy Statement.

Signing in to the studio

The private area of this site, where we manage the archive and read enquiries, sets a session cookie when a member of the studio signs in. It exists only to keep that person signed in, it is never set for visitors, and there is nothing to opt out of because you will never receive it.

If your browser says Do Not Track

Many browsers can send a Do Not Track signal. Plenty of sites ignore it. We do not. If your browser sends it, we load no session recording and count no page view. Nothing is set, and nothing is sent anywhere.

Refusing or removing cookies

  • Every major browser can block cookies or clear the ones already stored, usually under Settings, then Privacy.
  • Turning on Do Not Track in your browser stops the recording described above before it starts.
  • Microsoft offers its own opt out at choice.microsoft.com/opt-out.

Blocking cookies will not break this site. Nothing here depends on them except staying signed in to the studio.
